I've recently bought a new computer with Windows 8.1 (64-bit) on it, and I'm having some trouble when installing The Sims 2. I've tried everything I could think of, and my problem still persists. I think you're my last hope, fellow goslings. So, because I'd heard a lot of people have had problems when installing TS2 in Win 8, the first thing I tried was following guide on MTS. I couldn't get Grumpy Loader to work in Windows XP Service Pack 2 compatibility mode (the program would just freeze whenever I clicked the Load button), so I just ran it normally (trying to patch without Grumpy Loader did not work). I did however, use compatibility mode for the Autorun, as the guide mentions. When I then tried to run the game after installing every EP and SP I have, it wouldn't start.
The Sims 2 with a mountain of mods was good fun back in the day. I bought Sims 4 but left disappointed.
I clicked the exe, but nothing happened, so I decided to check the task manager. The program did show up, but then it would just disappear again. No error message, nothing. I tried deleting my cache files, bypassing the launcher, running in compatibility mode, etc. Nothing worked.
So I gave up, and uninstalled everything. Then today I decided to try again. This time I didn't follow the guide's recommendation of using compatibility mode, but I still had to use Grumpy Loader to patch. This time I tested the game after each installed expansion pack, which I didn't do last time. Everything went fine until I came to H&M Fashion Stuff. Again, I couldn't get the game to run, and again I tried deleting the cache files, bypassing the launcher, running in compatibility mode. Still nothing.
It shows up in task manager for a few seconds, then shuts down without any error message. One of my Google searches mentioned not actually launching the game from the H&M shortcut, but from Seasons. I tried this, and it worked. I thought it might have something to do with the Stuff Packs, but the strange thing is that I could get Glamour Life Stuff to start with it's shortcut (when it was the latest pack I installed).
Then I decided to just try and install Bon Voyage (after H&M) and see if that would start, but it doesn't. So, Seasons is the last EP that works for me.
I don't know what's going on here. Perhaps I should mention something that I noticed. I have a Nvidia GPU, and at some point when I was googling stuff, I remember seeing something about changing something in the Nvidia Control Panel. I did go into the Control Panel, and noticed that not all of my EPs were listed, which I thought was odd, but at the time I ignored it.
This was the first time I tried installing the games. The second time I tried to install the games (today), I did get all the EPs to show up, including H&M, but not Bon Voyage. Maybe this isn't relevant, but I thought I might as well mention it.
EDIT: Maybe I should also mention that I've not yet added any backups from my older computer (Neighborhoods, Downloads, etc) I have the following EPs/SPs.: Original (no Deluxe versions or anything like that, just the vanilla game) University Nightlife Open for Business Glamour Life Stuff Pets Seasons H&M Fashion Stuff Bon Voyage Teen Style Stuff Free Time Apartment Life And some quick info on my computer (let me know if you need more): CPU: Intel Core i5 3.4GHz GPU: GeForce GTX 780 RAM: 16 GB Ugh, I think that's everything I wanted to say, and I hope it's clear. I really hope someone can help me with this, it's getting really frustrating.
Am I missing something obvious here? What's going on? Windows 8 just sucks with backwards compatibility, the thread on mts didn't work for me either. The installer just doesn't open. I mean, there's always a way to fix things like this, but they're typically a real pain.
I'm probably going to have to run my game off of a separate hard drive or partition the existing one and install windows 7, for example. You could also uninstall windows 8 and install a compatible os, but that's still pretty messy. (but maybe I'm missing something super obvious too, you should get a second opinion. There's a good chance I'm just an idiot) I wish I could tell you an easy fix it would make both of our lives easier.
Hopefully someone will come and save us. Hurricane Taylor has a tremendously helpful post on ts2 + windows 8: And if that doesn't help, I also found some great tutorials on youtube that I personally used to install the game: (there is a small series from this user on ts2+win8 that may help) Installing ts2 on windows 8 is the 10th circle of hell but I think it become easier once you know what's going on. I've been able to load up my game (still just play-testing cc, no actual gameplay yet due to new dl folder) with no noticeable issues (apart from the no water reflection, which I can fix later). I have all eps save BV and OFB installed and quite a few SPs. I think I played ts2 on this computer but to be honest I can't verify. Thanks to everyone for your replies. Jessy: Well, the strange thing is that I've managed to install and start the base game, Uni, NL, OfB, GL, Pets, and Seasons without any problem (except patching, but that worked when using Grumpy Loader).

Then I can install H&M, but it won't start from the shortcut (I have to use Seasons instead), and Bon Voyage will install as well, but won't actually start no matter what I try. So it's not actually the installation part that's my problem. It doesn't seem like it anyway. Miros: Yes, the problem starts with BV. Please tell me there's an easy fix?.chuckle. WakahisaDManami: Like I mentioned before, I don't have any problems with actually installing the game. I've previously managed to install every EP and SP just fine, but then it wouldn't run.
And when trying to start the game after each installed EP, Bon Voyage was the first EP that won't start no matter what I do (all the previous ones worked fine, including BS and CAS). I guess there could be something wrong with the installation despite there being no obvious sign of it. I just don't get why all the EPs work fine up until BV. It's really confusing. Jessy & WakahisaDManami: Oh, no worries. My post is pretty long and I probably wasn't clear enough.

I blame the fact that I was pretty frustrated when I wrote it.cough. Thanks for trying to help, though. Much appreciated. Miros: You are awesome!
Let me explain why, and maybe at the same time I can provide some pointers for anyone who might have a problem similar to mine. I downloaded the SecuROM removal tool (found through a quick Google search), but it didn't seem to detect any SecuROM files on my computer (as in none showed up in the list). I ran it anyway, though, and afterwards I also checked my registry files to see that nothing was left behind. There were no traces of it, though I can't say if it's because I never had it to begin with, or because the Removal Tool removed it. Either way, as I'd uninstalled TS2 (again), I sat down and reinstalled everything once more. This time I didn't start the game after each installed EP/SP, but simply installed and patched all the way up to AL. I patched AL, and got a no-cd crack, and voila!
I don't know why, but it's awesome.chuckle. The game seems to run fine so far, and I've put my Downloads and Saved Sims folders back. I've yet to put my Neighborhoods folder back in, but that can wait. Thanks a ton for helping me with this! Now I've encountered an issue with Bodyshop, though. The clothing textures are all blurry, and I have no idea why, as they're all crisp and awesome in-game. I did a quick Google search, and found, but that talks about blurry Bodyshop projects, which is not my issue.
I have issues with downloaded clothing, and it's only in BS, not in-game. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Should I try that fix anyway? Hm, maybe I should create a new topic for this.?

Archived from groups: alt.games.the-sims I haven't been able to install Sims 2 Uni. It gets to 67% which is at the TS2UPD file, hangs for quite a few minutes, then pops an error saying it couldn't read the file from the media. I've tried installing it from both my DVD and CD ROM drives and get the same error. I had never installed Sims 2 on this computer (my computer is down atm.mobo went bad so I'm using my kids pc) until last night. Since the kids dvd drive was bad, we took MY dvd drive and put it in the kids pc so I could install Sims 2 DVD version. That went beautifully and being a fresh install, there are no hacks/objects/recolors in my game. I tried installing Sims 2 Uni BEFORE patching Sims 2 and after patching it and still got the same error.
I followed the instructions for manually uninstalling, listed here and still got that error. I also tried to copy the disk to my hard drive so I could install it from there. It gave me an error that said 'Cannot copy TS2UPD: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).'
I don't know if that's because they don't want it copied to your hard drive or if the file on the disk is really just bad. I almost feel like just giving up on Sims. I've been through too many hoops of anticipation, expectation and now frustration over this game. Archived from groups: alt.games.the-sims 'noname' wrote in message news:[email protected].

noname I had the same problem so i went to the store and they gave me another one.The cd was no good.I installed the new one with no problems at all. Archived from groups: alt.games.the-sims If you haven't tried this already, go to page 16 of the booklet you received with the University game, and try following the instructions for shutting down background tasks. I was having the same problem you're getting in installing, and that worked for me. Seems I had to do it the first time I installed S2, as well, but I could be remembering that incorrectly.

I called EA tech today and was told to return the game for a new one.
Since I pre ordered it from EA's site, I have no idea how long this will take. Will send it first thing tomorrow though.
